All activities organized by LES ETANGS DU MOULIN are strictly non-profit, charitable initiatives designed solely to serve the public interest and safeguard regional biodiversity. All membership fees and dues are fully reinvested in the association's public interest missions.

Citizen Science

Bi-Monthly Aquatic Quality Monitoring

Throughout 2026, LES ETANGS DU MOULIN operates a citizen-led freshwater quality testing initiative. On the first and third Saturday morning of every month from March through October, trained volunteer naturalists collect and analyze water samples from three strategic testing stations located across the pond system:

Inlet Station (Station Amont): Monitors incoming feeder streams for agricultural sedimentation, nitrates, and dissolved mineral balance.
Central Basin Station (Bassin Central): Measures dissolved oxygen saturation gradients, water column temperature profiles, and Secchi disk transparency.
Outlet Spillway Station (Déversoir Aval): Verifies outgoing water quality before it re-enters the downstream tributary network of the Aisne watershed.

All collected data is logged in a transparent field ledger accessible to the public and shared quarterly with the municipal council of Bonneil to assist with regional environmental planning.

Youth & Families

Introductory Ecology & Responsible Angling Clinics

To introduce children and teenagers (ages 7 to 16) to the wonders of freshwater nature without commercial barriers, the association conducts free seasonal introductory clinics. Led by experienced veteran anglers and naturalists, these half-day workshops teach:

Freshwater Fish Anatomy & Biology: Identifying cyprinids, percids, and esocids; understanding gills, lateral lines, and protective mucus membranes.
Gentle Catch-and-Release Protocol: Using barbless hooks, wet-hand handling, unhooking mats, and rapid return to water to ensure 100% survival.
Water Safety & First Aid: Floatation vest protocols, bank stability assessment, and outdoor weather preparedness.
Aquatic Entomology: Observing dragonflies, caddisflies, and water striders that form the ecological foundation of the food web.

Loaner equipment is provided free of charge by the association using funds reinvested from member solidarity dues.

Riparian Stewardship

Weekend Riparian Bank Rehabilitation Drives

Erosion of pond margins causes silting, destroys vegetation buffers, and endangers footpath stability. During autumn and early spring, LES ETANGS DU MOULIN mobilizes community volunteer work parties to repair and reinforce eroded shorelines using natural living bio-engineering (génie végétal):

Willow Fascines (Fascinage de Saule): Bundles of living dormant willow branches staked along fragile banks that take root and anchor the soil.
Helophyte Planting: Introducing native reeds (Phragmites australis), cattails (Typha latifolia), and wild yellow irises that trap sediments and filter runoff.
Deadfall Clearance: Selective removal of dead branches that obstruct water circulation while leaving submerged root snags as natural juvenile fish sanctuaries.

These hands-on work sessions foster camaraderie, provide physical exercise in the fresh air, and strengthen collective community ownership of our local natural landscape.

How to Participate in Our 2026 Programs

All programs organized by LES ETANGS DU MOULIN are strictly non-profit and open to the public. We do not sell commercial tickets or charge entrance fees for public educational events. To maintain safety and ensure adequate supervision for youth activities, advance registration is required for workshops.

Important Civic Guidelines

Participants must follow the safety instructions given by the association's field stewards. Minors must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or registered adult sponsor. Life jackets must be worn by children within 3 meters of deep water edges.
